What flattened ears can mean in cats

A cat pressing its ears sideways or backward is usually communicating heightened arousal or discomfort, but the exact meaning depends on the rest of its body language. In some situations, changes in ear position may also appear alongside pain.

A cat suddenly flattening its ears can look dramatic, but the signal does not translate neatly into a single emotion. Flattened or rotated ears often appear when a cat is stressed, frightened, irritated, overstimulated or preparing to defend itself, and changes in ear position can also occur with pain.

The safest way to interpret the gesture is to look at the whole cat rather than the ears alone.

Start with the direction of the ears

A relaxed cat generally carries its ears upright and facing forward, although the ears may swivel independently toward interesting sounds. VCA Animal Hospitals describes ears flattened against the head as a sign associated with stress in young cats, a position commonly nicknamed “airplane ears.”

There can also be subtle differences in position.

Cornell University's Feline Health Center notes that fearful cats may hold their ears flattened and outward, while aggressive cats may flatten them backward against the head. These distinctions are useful clues, although real cats do not always fit neatly into one category.

That is why the surrounding signals matter so much.

Fear can make a cat try to look smaller

When flattened ears come with crouching, a tucked tail, wide eyes or enlarged pupils, the cat may be frightened and trying to protect itself.

The ASPCA lists ears flattened sideways or backward among typical defensive postures, alongside crouching, a tucked tail and dilated pupils. Hissing, spitting, swatting or biting can appear if the cat feels increasingly threatened or has no easy way to escape.

In that situation, approaching for a reassuring cuddle may have the opposite effect of what was intended. Giving the cat physical space and reducing the source of stress is generally safer than forcing interaction.

Irritation can appear before a bite or swat

Flattened ears can also be an early “that is enough” signal during petting.

The ASPCA identifies ear flattening or repeated ear rotation among warning signs that may precede petting-induced aggression, often alongside tail movements, restlessness and dilated pupils. The recommended response is simple: stop the interaction rather than continuing until the cat feels it must escalate.

This makes ear position particularly useful as an early warning sign. A person who notices the change before the hiss, swat or bite has a chance to respect the cat's boundary sooner.

Play can complicate the picture

Pinned ears do not always mean a cat is experiencing serious fear.

Cornell notes that cats preparing for intense play aggression may thrash their tails, dilate their pupils and pin their ears while stalking or preparing to pounce.

Context helps separate this from a genuinely defensive encounter. A kitten stalking a toy during an energetic play session is in a very different situation from a cat cornered by an unfamiliar animal.

Even so, hands should not become the target of rough play. Toys that create some distance between a person's fingers and an excited cat are a safer choice.

Ear position can also be part of a pain expression

One important detail is easy to miss: unusual ear positioning is not exclusively behavioral.

A 2019 study published in Scientific Reports developed and validated the Feline Grimace Scale for assessing acute pain in cats. Researchers identified five facial features that changed with pain: ear position, tightening around the eyes, muzzle tension, whisker position and head position. The study found that overall scores were higher in cats experiencing pain and decreased after analgesic treatment.

VCA similarly notes that cats experiencing pain may hold their ears pulled apart and rotated outward, especially when this differs from their normal resting expression. Other possible clues include squinting, changes in whisker position, a lowered head, hiding, reduced play, reluctance to jump or increased irritability.

That does not mean every episode of flattened ears is a medical problem. Ear position alone cannot diagnose pain.

But if the change is persistent, appears without an obvious environmental trigger, or comes with changes in appetite, movement, litter-box behavior, activity or temperament, a veterinary examination is appropriate.

Read the sentence, not one word

Cat body language works more like a sentence than a collection of isolated symbols.

Flattened ears are one word in that sentence. The eyes, tail, whiskers, posture, sounds and immediate situation supply the rest.

A cat with flattened ears, a tucked body and wide pupils may be asking for distance. A cat whose ears suddenly pin back while being stroked may be signaling that the interaction should stop. An intensely playful kitten may briefly pin its ears while stalking a toy. And a cat whose facial expression and behavior have changed without an obvious reason may need medical attention.

Learning those combinations does more than make feline behavior easier to interpret. It gives cats a chance to communicate discomfort before they feel they need to escalate it.
