How to Introduce Two Cats Using Scent Before Sight

Keeping two cats apart at first does not mean they cannot begin getting acquainted. Carefully exchanging their scents can make the other cat more familiar before visual and face-to-face introductions begin.

Bringing a second cat home can tempt people to arrange an immediate introduction. For many cats, a slower approach is better: give each cat a separate space and let them encounter the other cat’s scent before sight. Cats Protection and veterinary behavior guidance both recommend gradual introductions that begin with separation and scent familiarization before visual contact.

There is a good behavioral reason for that order. Cats rely heavily on olfactory and chemical information when assessing their surroundings. Feline environmental guidelines published by the American Association of Feline Practitioners and International Society of Feline Medicine describe scent as important to cats’ sense of security and note that cats use facial and body rubbing to leave chemical signals in their environment.

Start with two separate spaces

When the new cat arrives, give them a quiet room containing the essentials: food, water, a litter box, resting areas, hiding opportunities, toys, and scratching options. The resident cat should continue to have access to their familiar part of the home.

This separation lets the newcomer adjust without also having to cope with direct social contact. It also prevents an early confrontation from becoming the cats’ first association with one another.

There is no universal timetable. Cats Protection notes that cats may take anywhere from a day to many weeks to become comfortable with another cat, while veterinary guidance emphasizes advancing according to the cats’ behavior rather than a fixed deadline.

Swap scent without forcing contact

Once both cats are settled in their separate areas, begin exchanging scent.

One simple method recommended by Cats Protection is to gently wipe a clean cloth around one cat’s cheeks or forehead and place it in the other cat’s environment. Do the same in reverse. Place the cloth somewhere the receiving cat can approach—or ignore—rather than pushing it toward their face.

Bedding and other objects that carry the cats’ scents can also be exchanged. VCA Animal Hospitals recommends swapping bedding or allowing the cats to explore each other’s areas at different times so they can become familiar with the other animal’s odor without meeting directly.

The goal is not to make the cats interact with the scent. It is to let that previously unfamiliar smell become part of an uneventful environment.

Try a room swap

After the cats have had repeated exposure to each other’s scent, you can expand the exercise by temporarily switching their locations.

Keep the cats physically apart while allowing the resident cat to investigate the newcomer’s room and the newcomer to explore another part of the home. VCA describes this as a way for both cats to encounter a broader range of each other’s smells before direct contact occurs.

This step can also help the new cat gradually learn the layout of the home without simultaneously dealing with the resident cat.

Watch the cats, not the calendar

The important question is not whether you have scent-swapped for three days, five days, or a week. It is whether the cats are coping comfortably.

Cats Protection recommends continuing scent exchanges until the cats are no longer reacting negatively to the other cat’s smell before moving to visual interaction.

If a cat repeatedly avoids the scented object or appears uncomfortable, there is no benefit in rushing forward. Keep the cats separated and give the process more time.

Sight comes next—but still behind a barrier

Once both cats are comfortable with scent exposure, introduce visual contact while preventing physical access.

Depending on the home, this can be done through a secure glass door, screen, partially opened doorway, or appropriately secured gate. The cats should be able to see one another while retaining the ability to move away.

Food, treats, or play can help create calm experiences around the barrier when both cats are receptive. VCA recommends beginning at a comfortable distance and progressing gradually rather than forcing the animals close together.

Only after repeated calm visual interactions should brief, supervised physical meetings begin.

If tension appears, go backward

Hissing or growling does not mean the introduction has permanently failed. It can mean the cats have progressed faster than one of them can comfortably handle.

VCA recommends returning to the previous successful stage if a negative interaction occurs. If tension starts during visual meetings, for example, separate the cats again and resume scent and location swapping before trying visual contact later.

Providing enough resources also matters once cats share more of the home. Cats Protection advises providing essential items such as feeding areas, water, litter trays, beds, scratching areas, and resting locations in sufficient numbers and separate locations to reduce competition.

The aim of a scent-first introduction is not to convince two cats to become instant friends. It is to remove some of the novelty before they ever stand in the same room.

For an animal that gathers important information through smell, getting acquainted without seeing each other can be a meaningful first meeting.
