Why dogs yawn even when they are not tired

Dogs certainly yawn when they are sleepy, but researchers also observe yawning during stressful, emotionally arousing and social situations. The surrounding context often matters more than the yawn itself.

A dog stretching out on the couch and letting out a huge yawn probably looks ready for a nap. But dogs also yawn while standing in a veterinary clinic, during training, around unfamiliar situations, and sometimes after watching or hearing a person yawn.

That is because yawning is not exclusively a sign of tiredness. Research on canine behavior shows that it can occur alongside stress and emotional arousal, and experiments suggest that some dogs can even “catch” yawns from humans.

A yawn can be a subtle sign of stress

Researchers studying canine welfare commonly include yawning among behaviors that may appear when a dog is coping with stress, conflict or an uncomfortable situation.

A review of stress during animal-assisted interventions, for example, describes yawning and sniffing as subtle displacement behaviors that handlers may overlook or misinterpret. Another study of dog behavior notes that yawning can occur as a displacement behavior in response to unpleasant stimuli or restricted conditions.

This does not mean that every yawn equals anxiety.

Behavioral signs can have more than one cause, and researchers caution against using individual behaviors as simple emotional labels. A 2024 study evaluating indicators of short-term emotional states in dogs recommended looking at combinations of behavioral and physiological measures rather than relying on a single signal.

So if your dog yawns once while relaxing after dinner, there may be nothing meaningful to decode. If the yawning repeatedly appears when strangers approach, during grooming, in the car or at the veterinarian, the situation deserves more attention.

Look at what happens around the yawn

The most useful clues usually come from context.

Researchers have observed yawning alongside behaviors such as lip licking, panting and restlessness in situations associated with canine fear or anxiety. In a 2026 veterinary study of dogs during travel, yawning was among the behavioral signs observed alongside other anxiety-related responses.

Yawning by itself, however, should not be treated as a precise stress meter. One study of therapy dogs found that yawning was relatively common during hospital visits even though salivary cortisol measurements did not indicate that the dogs’ welfare had deteriorated during those sessions.

That is a useful reminder: the same visible behavior can occur in different emotional states.

Watch what else the dog is doing. Body posture, movement, ears, tail position, attempts to move away, panting, repeated lip licking and changes in normal behavior can provide additional context.

Dogs can also catch human yawns

One of the most intriguing explanations has nothing directly to do with sleep or stress.

In a widely cited 2008 experiment involving 29 dogs, researchers reported that dogs were more likely to yawn after watching a human yawn than after watching control mouth movements. Twenty-one of the dogs yawned in the human-yawning condition.

Later research explored whether hearing a yawn could produce a similar effect. A 2012 study found evidence of auditory contagious yawning and reported that dogs responded more strongly to familiar yawns than unfamiliar ones.

That finding led to an appealing idea: perhaps dogs catch the yawns of people they are emotionally close to.

But the science is more complicated.

Studies examining contagious yawning in dogs have produced inconsistent results, and researchers have debated whether the behavior reflects empathy, social cognition, physiological arousal or some combination of mechanisms. A study specifically investigating social cognition and arousal cautioned that contagious yawning should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of an empathy-like process.

In other words, your dog yawning immediately after you do is genuinely interesting — but it does not give scientists a direct window into what the dog is feeling.

The pattern matters more than one big yawn

For everyday dog owners, the practical takeaway is simple: do not interpret a yawn in isolation.

An occasional yawn during a quiet evening is perfectly compatible with normal tiredness. A yawn that consistently appears during a particular interaction or environment may instead be one small part of the dog's response to stress or arousal. And a yawn that follows yours could be an example of socially triggered contagious yawning.

What deserves attention is a change from the dog's usual pattern, especially when repeated yawning appears together with obvious discomfort, unusual behavior or other signs that something is wrong.

Yawning turns out to be less like a single-word message and more like one piece of canine body language. The mouth opens the same way, but understanding why it happened depends on what the dog was doing — and experiencing — at the time.
