Deshedding tools work—but overuse can irritate pets’ skin

Undercoat tools can remove large amounts of loose fur, but repeated passes, excessive pressure, or the wrong tool can make grooming uncomfortable. Safe use depends on the animal’s coat, skin condition, and response.

A deshedding tool can pull an impressive amount of fur from a dog or cat, especially during a seasonal coat change. That visible pile can make it tempting to continue, but more removed hair does not necessarily mean the animal still needs more grooming.

Unlike a soft brush used for routine coat maintenance, many deshedding tools are designed to reach beneath the outer coat and collect loose undercoat. When used too aggressively, the same reach that makes them effective can also scrape sensitive skin, pull at the coat, or repeatedly irritate one area.

The goal is not to remove as much fur as possible. It is to remove loose hair while leaving the skin comfortable and the functioning coat intact.

Routine brushing and deshedding are not the same

Regular brushing has several benefits. It removes loose hair and dead skin cells, distributes natural oils and gives owners an opportunity to notice parasites, lumps, sore areas or changes in the coat.

The appropriate frequency varies considerably. VCA Animal Hospitals notes that dogs and cats with long, silky or curly coats may require daily brushing to prevent tangles, while short-haired animals often need less frequent attention.

That guidance does not mean every grooming tool should be used daily. A soft bristle brush, grooming glove or appropriate comb generally acts differently from a tool designed to penetrate a dense undercoat.

Undercoat rakes and similar deshedding tools are intended primarily for animals with the coat structure they were designed to reach. The American Kennel Club advises choosing rake pins that match a dog’s coat length. A tool that is too long, sharp or aggressive for the coat can reach the skin instead of moving comfortably through the fur.

Why repeated passes can become a problem

Grooming friction accumulates. Repeatedly working the same spot, pressing harder to collect more hair or dragging a tool through resistance can make the skin sore even if there is no obvious injury during the first few strokes.

PetMD advises brushing in the direction of the coat and avoiding contact that scrapes the skin. Its grooming guidance is especially cautious about using metal deshedding tools on cats because feline skin can be delicate and easily scraped.

The animal’s reaction matters as much as the amount of fur in the tool. Flinching, repeatedly turning toward the brush, pulling away, hiding or suddenly resisting may indicate discomfort. A previous painful grooming experience can also make a dog anxious around brushes, according to the American Kennel Club.

Continuing while an animal is distressed can cause physical discomfort and make future grooming more difficult.

Coat type should determine the tool

There is no single brush that suits every pet.

Smooth-coated dogs may do well with a flexible rubber brush or grooming glove. Dogs with a dense double coat may benefit from an appropriately sized undercoat rake during heavy shedding. Long-haired animals may need a long-toothed comb, while curly, non-shedding coats often require a slicker brush and professional trimming.

Cats also differ widely. A short-haired cat with a sparse undercoat may need only a bristle or rubber brush, while a long-haired cat may require regular combing to prevent mats.

A deshedding tool should not be treated as a universal solution for tangles. Mats can sit tightly against the skin, and pulling at them may be painful. VCA recommends professional assistance for severe or extensive matting and warns against using scissors because folded skin can easily be mistaken for part of the mat.

A safer way to deshed

Before starting, check the coat for redness, sores, scabs, mats and areas that appear sensitive. Do not use an intensive grooming tool over damaged or inflamed skin.

Choose a tool intended for the animal’s species, coat length and coat type. Work in small sections, follow the direction in which the hair naturally grows and use only enough pressure to guide the tool through loose fur. It should not be necessary to dig into the coat.

Avoid making numerous passes over one place simply because hair continues to collect. Loose fur from neighboring areas can be drawn into the tool, so a full collection of hair does not prove that the same patch needs more work.

Sessions should remain short enough for the skin to stay comfortable and the animal to remain relaxed. Follow the tool manufacturer’s instructions, but reduce the duration or frequency if the pet shows sensitivity. A veterinarian or experienced professional groomer can recommend a schedule based on the individual coat.

Know when shedding may be a health signal

Normal shedding varies by breed, season, climate and whether an animal lives mostly indoors. Sudden heavy shedding, bald patches or a coat that becomes thin, dull or easy to pull out should not automatically be managed with more deshedding.

The ASPCA lists parasites, infections, allergies, hormonal disorders and other health conditions among the possible causes of excessive hair loss in dogs. Redness, bumps, rashes, scabs, open sores, persistent scratching or repeated licking also warrant veterinary attention.

A deshedding tool can help manage normal loose undercoat, but it cannot treat the reason an animal is losing excessive hair. When the skin or coat changes unexpectedly, finding the cause is more useful than collecting a larger pile of fur.
