Paw balm in heat and cold: What it can—and cannot—do

A pet-safe balm can help manage dry paw pads and provide a limited barrier against rough ground, ice, and road salt. It cannot make dangerously hot pavement or freezing terrain safe.

A dog’s paw pads are built for walking, but they are not immune to burns, cracks, chemicals, or rough ground. Paw balm can provide useful seasonal support by softening dry pads or adding a light protective coating—but it should never be treated as invisible footwear.

That distinction matters most during extreme weather. Applying balm does not make a midday summer sidewalk safe, nor does it provide the insulation of properly fitted boots in snow and freezing temperatures.

What paw balm actually does

Products sold as paw balms or paw waxes vary, but they generally fall into two overlapping categories.

Moisturizing balms are intended to soften pads that have become dry or rough. Firmer paw waxes leave a more noticeable surface coating that may reduce direct contact with irritants and lessen friction on rough terrain.

The RSPCA recommends a nontoxic balm as one measure to help prevent dry, cracked pads during winter. The American Kennel Club similarly suggests soothing balm or protective wax for dry and cracking paw pads.

This does not mean every rough-looking paw needs treatment. Healthy pads are naturally thick and textured. Owners should be more concerned about visible fissures, bleeding, persistent licking, pain, limping, or a sudden refusal to walk.

In hot weather, surface temperature comes first

Hot pavement, concrete, sand, artificial turf, and metal can burn paw pads. The American Animal Hospital Association warns that ground surfaces exposed to direct sunlight may become much hotter than the surrounding air.

Before a walk, place the back of your hand against the surface for about seven seconds. If you cannot comfortably keep it there, the ground is too hot for your dog.

Paw wax may provide a limited physical barrier, but it cannot reliably insulate paws from dangerously hot ground. The safest response is to change the route or timing: walk during cooler hours and favor shaded ground, grass, or dirt.

Well-fitted dog boots can provide stronger physical separation, although they should be introduced gradually and checked for rubbing. Neither boots nor balm should be used to justify exercise when the weather itself creates a heatstroke risk.

Signs of burned pads can include:

• Limping or refusing to walk
• Repeatedly lifting the feet
• Licking or chewing the paws
• Redness, discoloration, or blisters
• Whimpering or other signs of pain

Move the dog off the hot surface immediately and rinse the paws gently with cool—not icy—water. Blisters, exposed tissue, marked discoloration, or continuing pain require veterinary attention.

Cold weather brings different hazards

Winter conditions can dry and crack paw pads, while snow and ice may cause abrasions or collect painfully between the toes. Road salt, grit, de-icing chemicals, and antifreeze create additional hazards.

A nontoxic paw balm or wax may help limit dryness and reduce direct contact with some surface irritants. However, it does not replace post-walk cleaning. The paws, spaces between the toes, and lower abdomen should still be wiped or washed to remove salt and other residues.

For prolonged exposure to snow or freezing ground, properly fitted boots provide more substantial protection. Trimming excess hair around the pads can also reduce the formation of ice balls, although owners who are not comfortable doing this should ask a groomer or veterinarian for help.

Choose a product made for pets

Dogs commonly lick their paws, so anything applied to the pads should be formulated and labeled for the intended animal. “Natural” does not automatically mean harmless.

The ASPCA advises against directly applying concentrated essential oils to pets. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that essential oils can be absorbed through the skin or swallowed during grooming, with tea tree oil among the most frequently reported essential-oil intoxicants.

Human skin products may also contain ingredients unsuitable for licking. Zinc oxide, commonly found in certain human barrier creams and sunscreens, can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and more serious injury when ingested by pets.

Choose a clearly labeled canine paw product, review the complete ingredient list, and follow its application directions. Ask a veterinarian before using a product on open cracks, burns, infected skin, or persistently painful paws.

Apply a small amount to clean, dry pads and allow it to settle before the dog walks around. Stop using the product if redness, swelling, itching, or increased licking develops.

Balm is one part of paw care

Paw balm is most useful as a small part of a wider routine: inspect the feet, avoid hazardous surfaces, clean the paws after exposure to salt or chemicals, and use boots when a stronger barrier is needed.

Most importantly, balm is preventive care—not treatment for a significant burn, deep crack, or infection. When a dog is limping, bleeding, developing blisters, or exposing tissue beneath the pad, the next step is veterinary care rather than another layer of balm.
