Why dogs shouldn’t eat cat food as a regular diet
A few stolen bites are unlikely to harm most healthy dogs, but cat food is formulated for a different species. Regular access can contribute to digestive trouble, excess calories, weight gain, and problems in dogs sensitive to fat.
A healthy dog that steals a few bites from the cat’s bowl will usually be fine. The problem begins when cat food becomes a regular meal, a frequent snack, or a large one-time feast.
Cat food is not generally poisonous to dogs. It is simply designed around feline nutritional requirements—and those requirements differ substantially from a dog’s.
Cats and dogs need different nutrient profiles
Cats are obligate carnivores with specific requirements for nutrients such as taurine, arachidonic acid, preformed vitamin A, and higher amounts of certain amino acids. Commercial cat foods are formulated to meet those needs.
Dogs can obtain nutrients from a broader range of animal- and plant-derived ingredients. Their food is balanced according to canine requirements, which differ in both the amounts and ratios of protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.
The Association of American Feed Control Officials, or AAFCO, therefore maintains separate nutrient profiles for dogs and cats. It also separates foods by life stage, including growth, adult maintenance, and reproduction.
This distinction matters because “complete and balanced” does not mean complete and balanced for every animal. A cat food may be nutritionally complete for an adult cat while still being inappropriate as a dog’s regular diet.
Cat food is often richer than dog food
Many cat foods contain more protein and fat than comparable dog foods. They may also be more calorie-dense, so a portion that looks small can add a meaningful amount of energy to a dog’s daily intake.
VCA Animal Hospitals notes that a healthy adult dog fed only cat food every day would be likely to gain weight and could eventually become obese. The risk increases when cat food is added on top of the dog’s normal meals rather than replacing part of them.
Regularly feeding the wrong food can also disrupt the nutritional balance intended for the dog’s size, age, activity level, and health. Puppies, pregnant or nursing dogs, seniors, and dogs receiving therapeutic diets have needs that make unplanned food substitutions particularly unsuitable.
Some dogs are more vulnerable to rich food
A sudden serving of unfamiliar, rich food can cause vomiting, diarrhea, poor appetite, or abdominal discomfort. The amount that causes trouble varies with the dog’s size, health, usual diet, and the specific cat food.
Extra caution is warranted for dogs with a history of pancreatitis, high blood-fat levels, chronic kidney or liver disease, obesity, or a sensitive digestive system. Dogs prescribed a low-fat or otherwise restricted diet should not share another pet’s food unless a veterinarian has specifically approved it.
Pancreatitis—the inflammation of the pancreas—has multiple possible causes, and in many cases the exact trigger is never identified. VCA says fatty meals may be associated with some cases, while low-fat veterinary diets are commonly used when managing affected dogs. Cat food should therefore be kept away from dogs already known to be sensitive to dietary fat.
What to do after a dog eats cat food
If a healthy dog eats a small amount and behaves normally, monitoring is usually sufficient. Make sure fresh water is available and watch for vomiting, diarrhea, reduced appetite, lethargy, or signs of abdominal pain.
Contact a veterinarian promptly if the dog:
- Ate a large quantity relative to its normal meal
- Vomits repeatedly or cannot keep water down
- Develops marked lethargy, abdominal pain, or a swollen abdomen
- Refuses food or has persistent diarrhea
- Has pancreatitis or another condition requiring a controlled diet
Do not induce vomiting or give medication unless a veterinarian or animal poison professional instructs you to do so.
If a dog repeatedly rejects its own food but eagerly eats cat food, the answer is not to switch species. Dental pain, nausea, illness, feeding habits, or simple preference may be involved, so a veterinary examination is appropriate when appetite changes persist.
Separate feeding prevents most problems
Feed cats and dogs from separate bowls and remove unfinished food after scheduled meals. A cat’s bowl can also be placed in a dog-free room, behind a cat-sized access door, on an elevated feeding station, or inside a microchip-controlled feeder.
Check the small-print nutritional adequacy statement on the package as well. It should identify whether the food is formulated for dogs or cats and the life stage it is intended to support.
An occasional stolen bite is usually an inconvenience, not an emergency. As a routine, however, dogs should receive a complete and balanced diet formulated specifically for dogs—and for their individual life stage and health needs.
