Why cats sleep in tiny spaces: Safety, warmth, and control

A cramped box may look uncomfortable to a human, but its walls can give a cat privacy, warmth, and control over possible threats. The behavior is usually normal—unless a cat suddenly begins hiding much more than usual.

A cat may ignore an expensive bed, fold itself into a delivery box barely wider than its body, and fall asleep within minutes. The choice looks absurd from the outside, but the small space offers several things cats value: concealment, physical boundaries, warmth, and control.

Most importantly, a tight resting place can function as a refuge. The latest caregiver guidance from the Feline Veterinary Medical Association and International Cat Care says cats need safe places where they can retreat and feel protected. Many prefer a space surrounded by sides and large enough for only one cat.

Four walls reduce uncertainty

Cats are skilled hunters, but they are also highly alert to unfamiliar sounds, animals, people, and changes in their territory. Sleeping leaves an animal less prepared to respond, so a protected location can reduce the number of directions from which something might approach.

Inside a box, basket, open carrier, or shelf cubby, the cat does not have to monitor an entire room. Solid sides limit visual exposure, while an opening lets the animal watch what is happening outside.

That sense of control matters. A cat that can enter, leave, observe, or withdraw on its own terms may feel more secure than one resting in the middle of an exposed floor.

This does not mean every cat wants complete enclosure. Some prefer a high perch with a wide view, while others choose a blanket cave or a partly covered carrier. Age, previous experiences, household activity, temperature, and relationships with other pets can all affect the choice.

Hiding boxes have measurable effects

The benefit of a box is not merely an internet theory. Research involving cats in shelters and veterinary settings suggests that access to a hiding place can reduce behavioral signs of stress.

A 2019 study of shelter cats found that those given hiding boxes adapted more quickly during quarantine than cats without them. The researchers concluded that hiding enrichment offered a simple way to help reduce behavioral stress, although the findings came from a shelter environment and should not be treated as proof that every household cat responds identically.

A randomized study of 80 cats hospitalized after neutering surgery also tested hiding boxes, feline facial pheromones, a combination of both, or no added enrichment. Providing enrichment that included a hiding box reduced observed stress scores in some groups, particularly among cats initially classified as more aggressive. The study’s cortisol and food-intake measurements were less useful, illustrating why feline stress cannot be judged from a single sign.

Snug spaces may also feel warmer

Cats commonly seek warm resting places, from sunny windowsills to folded laundry. Cornell University’s Feline Health Center specifically advises keeping older cats’ preferred beds away from drafts while avoiding surfaces hot enough to cause burns.

A small container can reduce air movement around the body, and curling tightly decreases the amount of exposed surface area. Together, those effects may help the cat retain warmth. This is a plausible reason a snug box can be especially appealing in a cool or air-conditioned room, but warmth alone does not explain every box-loving cat.

The material may add comfort too. Corrugated cardboard is soft enough to lean against, provides a scratching surface, and gradually picks up the cat’s familiar scent. Still, individual preference matters more than any claim that cats universally love one material.

How to offer a safe sleeping box

A “tiny” space should be snug, not dangerous. The cat should be able to enter and leave freely, breathe normally, reposition its body, and avoid becoming trapped.

Remove staples, loose tape, plastic handles, sharp edges, and packaging material that could be swallowed. Keep the box dry and stable, and never close a cat inside it. Appliances, reclining furniture, storage bins, dryers, vehicle compartments, and other spaces that may shut or move are not safe substitutes.

In a multi-cat household, provide at least one separate refuge for each cat. Veterinary environmental guidelines recommend spreading safe places around the home so one animal cannot control access to all of them. A retreat with more than one exit can be particularly useful when another cat might block the entrance.

Older cats or cats with limited mobility may need low-sided boxes, ramps, or retreats positioned closer to the floor.

When hiding deserves attention

Sleeping in a box is usually ordinary behavior. A sudden change is more important than the location itself.

Contact a veterinarian if a normally social cat begins hiding persistently or if the behavior appears alongside reduced appetite, vomiting, changes in drinking or urination, breathing difficulty, limping, poor grooming, unusual vocalization, or reluctance to jump. Cats often conceal discomfort, and a new preference for isolation can be an early sign that something has changed.

If your cat has always slept folded into a box seemingly designed for half a cat, the explanation is probably simple: what looks cramped to you may feel protected and pleasantly private to them.
