Why urban dogs need regular paw care

Pavement, broken glass, road salt, and chemical residue can turn an ordinary walk into a paw problem. A quick inspection before and after each outing can catch trouble early.

A city dog’s paws meet surfaces that human feet rarely touch unprotected: sun-heated asphalt, gritty sidewalks, curbside residue, broken glass, and winter deicing chemicals. Paw pads are built for contact with the ground, but they are not immune to burns, cuts, irritation, or cracking.

Regular paw care does not require an elaborate grooming routine. For most dogs, it begins with choosing a safer walking route and taking a minute to inspect each foot after returning home.

Paw pads do several jobs at once

The thick pads under a dog’s feet provide traction, cushion each step, help protect deeper tissue, and offer some insulation from hot and cold surfaces. This toughness can create a false sense of security.

Unlike shoes, paw pads cannot be removed and examined at the end of a walk. Small injuries may also be difficult to spot unless the toes are separated and the spaces between the pads are checked.

City environments concentrate several hazards along the same route. Rough pavement can create friction, while tiny stones, metal fragments, thorns, or glass can lodge between the toes or cut a pad. In hot weather, asphalt and concrete can become uncomfortable or damaging even when the air temperature feels manageable.

The American Veterinary Medical Association advises avoiding hot sidewalks and roads that could burn a dog’s pads. Grass and shaded routes are safer options on extremely hot days.

The season changes the risk

Summer paw protection begins before leaving home. Touch the walking surface with your hand and consider whether you would be comfortable standing on it barefoot. If it feels excessively hot, postpone the walk, shorten it, or move to grass and shade.

In colder climates, snow and ice introduce a different problem. Salt and chemical deicers can become trapped between the pads, irritate the skin, and later be swallowed when a dog licks its feet.

Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine recommends avoiding heavily treated sidewalks when possible and washing a dog’s feet after exposure. Boots may provide an additional barrier, while trimming excess fur around the pads can reduce the accumulation of snow and ice.

Even in cities without snow, paws can pick up mud, cleaning chemicals, oil, and other unidentified residue. A rinse or wipe after a walk is useful whenever the feet have crossed visibly dirty or contaminated ground. Dry the paws afterward, paying attention to the spaces between the toes.

A two-minute urban paw routine

Before a walk, look at the route and weather. Avoid visibly contaminated pavement, construction debris, broken glass, and surfaces that are excessively hot or cold.

After the walk:

1. Examine all four paws in good light.
2. Separate the toes and check between the pads.
3. Look for stones, splinters, glass, matted fur, swelling, redness, cracks, or damaged nails.
4. Rinse away salt, dirt, or suspicious residue with lukewarm water.
5. Dry the paws and watch how the dog walks.

Do not pull out an object that is deeply embedded. Digging at it can worsen the injury, increase bleeding, and cause more pain.

Dry or cracked pads should not automatically be treated with human hand cream. The ASPCA advises asking a veterinarian about an appropriate pad moisturizer because products intended for people may soften the pads excessively or contain ingredients unsuitable for dogs.

Nails need individual attention

Walking on concrete may naturally wear down the claws that touch the ground. This does not mean every city dog can skip nail checks.

Dewclaws sit higher on the leg and usually do not contact the pavement, so they can continue growing unnoticed. Older dogs, dogs with arthritis, and dogs that shift their weight because of pain may also wear their nails unevenly.

There is no universal trimming schedule. Check every nail regularly and ask a veterinarian or groomer for guidance if the claws appear overgrown or if you are unsure where the sensitive inner portion of the nail begins.

Paw licking is a clue, not a diagnosis

A dog that suddenly limps, repeatedly lifts one foot, or refuses to continue walking may have stepped on something or suffered a heat, cold, or chemical injury. Other warning signs include bleeding, discoloration, blisters, exposed tissue, swelling, odor, discharge, or persistent chewing.

Repeated licking does not always mean the paw is dirty. Veterinary charity PDSA notes that excessive licking can be associated with allergies, parasites, arthritis, wounds, foreign material, cysts, stress, or other sources of irritation.

Contact a veterinarian promptly for a deep cut, embedded object, continuing bleeding, significant burn, exposed tissue, marked swelling, discharge, or persistent pain. A dog that keeps licking or chewing its feet without an obvious injury also deserves an examination to identify the underlying cause.

Paw care is easy to overlook because the damage develops at ground level. For an urban dog, however, a brief check after every walk can be as practical as clipping on the leash before leaving.
