Why Blood Pressure Checks Matter More as Pets Get Older

High blood pressure may cause few obvious warning signs until it affects a pet’s vision, kidneys, brain, or heart. A simple clinic test can help veterinarians detect trouble earlier, especially in senior cats and pets with chronic disease.

Aging pets often receive bloodwork, urine testing, and more frequent physical exams. Blood pressure deserves a place in that conversation too, because hypertension can quietly damage important organs before an owner notices anything unusual.

This is particularly relevant for older cats and for dogs or cats living with kidney, hormonal, or other chronic illnesses. The test is noninvasive, but obtaining a reliable result requires a calm setting and careful technique.

High blood pressure is often a clue, not an isolated disease

Primary hypertension—the type commonly diagnosed in people without another identifiable condition—is considered uncommon in dogs and cats. Veterinary hypertension is more often associated with an underlying health problem.

Chronic kidney disease is a major connection in both species. In cats, hyperthyroidism is another important cause or contributing condition. Dogs may also develop hypertension alongside disorders such as hyperadrenocorticism, commonly called Cushing’s syndrome.

These illnesses become more common as pets age. That means age raises risk partly through other diseases, even though reaching a particular birthday does not automatically mean a pet has high blood pressure.

Medications and an animal’s overall clinical condition can also influence blood pressure. Veterinarians therefore interpret the number alongside the physical examination, medical history, laboratory findings, and any symptoms—not as a stand-alone result.

A pet may look normal until an organ is affected

Hypertension can remain difficult to spot at home. Dogs and cats do not report headaches or other subtle sensations, and early changes may be mistaken for ordinary aging.

Persistently elevated pressure can injure small blood vessels and affect the eyes, kidneys, brain, and cardiovascular system. Possible warning signs include:

• Sudden vision loss, enlarged pupils, or bumping into objects
• Disorientation, weakness, unusual behavior, or seizures
• Increased thirst or urination associated with kidney disease
• Changes related to an underlying hormonal disorder
• New heart or circulation abnormalities detected during an examination

In cats, high blood pressure can damage the retina and may cause retinal detachment. Sudden blindness is a veterinary emergency, whether hypertension is suspected or not. Early treatment may preserve vision in some cases, but damage is not always reversible.

Owners should not wait for one of these dramatic signs before discussing screening. The purpose of routine measurement is to identify a problem while a pet still appears comfortable.

What happens during a veterinary blood pressure check

The process resembles human blood pressure testing, although the equipment and technique are adapted for animals. A cuff is placed around a leg or the tail, and a Doppler or oscillometric device estimates the pressure.

The procedure should not hurt. Most pets remain awake, and sedation is generally avoided because it can alter the result.

Stress matters, however. A frightened cat or excited dog may temporarily produce a higher reading—the veterinary equivalent of a “white-coat effect.” For that reason, the team may allow the animal time to settle, limit handling, select an appropriately sized cuff, and take several measurements.

A veterinarian may also repeat the test during another visit unless the reading is extremely high or there is evidence of immediate organ damage. One nervous reading does not necessarily confirm hypertension.

Consistency improves usefulness. Recording the cuff location, cuff size, device, body position, and the pet’s behavior makes future readings easier to compare.

Which older pets are stronger candidates for screening?

The American Animal Hospital Association’s senior-care guidance includes blood pressure monitoring among recommended diagnostic considerations. Its frequency should still be individualized because “senior” does not begin at the same age for every animal.

Large dogs often reach older life stages earlier than small dogs, while cats follow a different aging pattern. A veterinarian can determine the appropriate screening schedule from the pet’s species, breed, size, health history, and current medications.

A blood pressure check may be especially useful for:

• Senior and geriatric cats
• Dogs or cats with chronic kidney disease
• Cats diagnosed with hyperthyroidism
• Dogs with Cushing’s syndrome or certain adrenal disorders
• Pets with unexplained vision, neurologic, kidney, or cardiac changes
• Animals already being treated for hypertension

Healthy older animals may be screened during routine wellness visits. Pets with a relevant diagnosis or an abnormal result may need checks more often.

The number needs clinical context

Veterinary guidelines assess systolic blood pressure partly by the likelihood of organ damage. Readings below 140 mm Hg are generally categorized as carrying minimal risk, while persistent readings of 160 mm Hg or higher warrant greater concern. Values at or above 180 mm Hg are associated with a high risk of injury.

Those categories are not intended for home diagnosis. Measurement errors, anxiety, equipment, and technique can all affect the number. A pattern of reliable readings matters more than an isolated result.

When hypertension is confirmed, the veterinarian may investigate an underlying disease, evaluate the eyes and other organs, and prescribe treatment appropriate to the species and cause. Follow-up measurements help determine whether pressure is being reduced safely.

Blood pressure screening cannot replace bloodwork, urinalysis, eye examinations, or a complete physical exam. Its value is that it can reveal a problem those other checks may not fully capture.

For an older pet’s next wellness visit, a useful question is simple: “Would a blood pressure measurement add anything to today’s examination?” The answer will depend on the individual animal, but asking before symptoms appear may help protect the organs hypertension can quietly harm.
