Why Flat-Faced Dogs Need Extra Cleaning Around Their Faces

Wrinkles and watery eyes may look harmless, but a flat-faced dog’s anatomy can trap moisture against the skin. Gentle cleaning, thorough drying, and knowing when to call a veterinarian can prevent discomfort from being overlooked.

Flat-faced dogs often need more than an occasional wipe after a messy meal. Their shortened muzzles, prominent eyes, and deep facial folds can redirect tears and hold moisture, creating conditions where irritated or infected skin may develop.

For Pugs, French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Pekingese, and similar breeds, cleaning is part of health monitoring. It is also important to understand its limits: routine care can remove debris and moisture, but it cannot correct an eye disorder, infected skin fold, or breathing problem.

Why those wrinkles can become painful

Veterinarians call the flattened head shape “brachycephaly.” The skull bones are shortened, while the skin and other soft tissues still have to fit around a smaller facial structure.

That arrangement may produce deep folds around the nose, eyes, and lips. Inside a fold, warmth, friction, poor ventilation, and moisture can irritate the skin and encourage microbial overgrowth.

A Royal Veterinary College study based on the clinical records of more than 900,000 dogs in the United Kingdom found that flat-faced dogs were more frequently diagnosed with skin fold dermatitis than dogs with medium-length skulls. Watery eyes are not always just cosmetic

Flat-faced dogs may also have tears that spill over their eyelids instead of draining normally through the nasolacrimal ducts. The damp fur below the eyes can become stained, but color is not the only concern.

Repeated wetness can irritate the skin beneath the fur. Excessive tearing may also be associated with blocked tear drainage, abnormal eyelashes, eyelid problems, allergies, infection, or damage to the eye.

That means owners should not assume every wet eye is normal for the breed. New or worsening discharge deserves attention, especially if the dog is squinting, rubbing its face, keeping an eye closed, or developing redness or cloudiness. VCA Animal Hospitals

A safer way to clean the face

Every dog’s folds are different. Some need frequent attention, while dogs with shallower folds may need much less. A veterinarian can recommend a schedule and product based on the dog’s skin, anatomy, allergies, and history of infection.

A simple routine usually begins with good light and a calm dog:

1. Gently lift each fold and look for redness, sores, discharge, or an unusual smell.
2. Use a soft cloth, gauze pad, or veterinary-approved wipe to remove visible moisture and debris.
3. Use a fresh section of the cloth for each area rather than moving material from one fold to another.
4. Clean around the eyes without rubbing the eye itself.
5. Pat every fold dry, including the deepest part that can be reached without forcing the skin.

The last step matters. A clean fold should also be dry; leaving cleansing moisture behind may recreate the damp environment the routine was meant to prevent.

Do not place cleansers, medicated drops, or homemade mixtures in or near the eyes unless a veterinarian has confirmed that they are safe for that use. Products formulated for human skin may sting, irritate, or be harmful if swallowed.

Dogs that resist because the area is painful should not be restrained for aggressive scrubbing. Pain during cleaning may be the first clue that veterinary treatment is needed.

Do not overlook the lips and teeth

Moisture and food can also collect around deep lip folds. These areas may develop the same combination of friction, odor, inflammation, and infection found in folds around the nose.

Owners should ask their veterinarian to demonstrate exactly which areas require cleaning. A routine designed for one Pug or Bulldog may not suit another dog with different folds or an existing skin condition.

When wiping is not enough

Arrange a veterinary examination if a fold becomes persistently red, swollen, wet, painful, ulcerated, or foul-smelling. Yellow or green eye discharge, repeated squinting, pawing at the face, corneal cloudiness, or a sudden increase in tearing also warrants prompt attention.

These signs may require diagnosis and prescription treatment. Repeatedly covering them with wipes or creams can delay care without addressing the underlying cause.
