Thailand Digital Arrival Card: What to Do Before You Fly
A trip to Thailand can begin with beaches, temples, street food, or a long-awaited hotel check-in — but for foreign travelers, it now also begins with an online form. Thailand’s Digital Arrival Card, known as TDAC, is a required pre-arrival step for non-Thai nationals entering the country by air, land, or sea.
The good news is that it is not complicated.
The bad news is that it can become annoying if you leave it until the airport, cannot find your hotel address, or accidentally use an unofficial website that asks for money.
For most visitors, the best way to treat TDAC is simple: add it to your final travel checklist, along with your passport, flight details, accommodation confirmation, and phone battery.
What the TDAC actually is
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is an online arrival form that replaced the old paper arrival card many travelers used to fill out on the plane or after landing.
It collects basic information such as passport details, travel plans, address in Thailand, and health declaration information. It is designed to make arrival information digital before travelers reach immigration.
But one point matters: TDAC is not a visa.
Submitting the form does not guarantee entry, does not replace a visa if your nationality requires one, and does not remove normal immigration checks. It is an arrival card, not permission to stay in Thailand by itself.
That distinction is important for travelers who are visa-exempt, applying for visa on arrival, entering on a long-stay visa, or returning as foreign residents. TDAC is one requirement. Your actual entry conditions still depend on your passport, visa status, purpose of travel, and length of stay.
Who needs to complete it
TDAC applies to all non-Thai nationals entering Thailand by air, land, or sea.
That includes tourists flying into Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Krabi, or Samui. It also includes foreign residents returning to Thailand, business travelers, long-stay visitors, and people entering through land borders.
Families should also pay attention. Children and infants are not automatically exempt just because they are traveling with parents. Each foreign traveler needs arrival information submitted.
There are limited exceptions. Travelers who are only transiting or transferring through Thailand without passing through immigration control do not need TDAC. Foreigners entering with a Border Pass are also treated differently under official guidance.
A simple way to think about it is this: if you will pass through Thai immigration with a foreign passport, expect to complete TDAC.
The timing is easy to misunderstand
Travelers should submit the TDAC within three days before arriving in Thailand, including the arrival date.
That means it is not something to complete months before your trip. It belongs near the end of your planning, when your flight, first address in Thailand, and arrival details are already clear.
For example, if you arrive on Friday, you should complete it during the few days before arrival, not long before your travel date. The form can be submitted individually or as a group, which is useful for families and small travel parties.
Still, accuracy matters. A group submission does not mean one person’s details can be vague. Names, passport numbers, dates of birth, nationalities, arrival information, and accommodation details should match the traveler’s documents.
This is where many avoidable problems begin.
A tired traveler may copy a passport number incorrectly. A parent may forget to prepare a child’s details. A visitor may know the hotel name but not the full address. None of these issues is dramatic at home, but they can feel stressful when a flight is approaching.
The detail many travelers forget
The TDAC asks for an address in Thailand. For most visitors, this means the hotel, resort, apartment, guesthouse, or first place they will stay after arrival.
This is the detail people often do not have ready.
They know they are staying “near Sukhumvit,” “in Patong,” or “close to the old city,” but the form may require more specific accommodation information. Before starting, open your hotel confirmation and keep the full address nearby.
A smart mini-checklist before filling out TDAC:
Passport
Arrival date
Flight, vehicle, or vessel details
First address in Thailand
Email address
Basic health declaration information
Once these are ready, the form is usually a short task. Without them, it becomes a frustrating hunt through booking apps, email inboxes, screenshots, and travel documents.
Keep the QR code somewhere safe
After submission, travelers receive confirmation details, including a QR code, by email.
You normally do not need to print it if you can show it on your phone, but relying only on a live email app is not ideal. Airports are full of tiny inconveniences: weak Wi-Fi, dead batteries, roaming problems, locked email accounts, and phones that suddenly refuse to load the one thing you need.
The safer habit is to save a screenshot or downloaded copy before leaving for the airport. A printed backup is not always necessary, but it can be useful for travelers who prefer paper documents or are traveling with children, older relatives, or a large group.
The goal is not to overprepare. It is to avoid needing internet access at the worst possible moment.
Use the official site only
The official TDAC portal is provided by Thailand’s Immigration Bureau, and the official page states that the service has no fee.
That matters because travelers may find unofficial websites that look formal, offer paid processing, or charge service fees for something they could complete themselves. Some may be travel-assistance businesses, but others can confuse visitors who only want the government form.
Before entering passport information, check the web address carefully.
The official site is:
https://tdac.immigration.go.th
If a site asks for payment, looks like an advertisement, or uses a similar-looking address, pause before entering personal information.
What to do if something is wrong
Mistakes can happen, especially with long passport numbers, similar letters and numbers, or hotel details copied from a booking app.
Some submitted TDAC information can be updated before travel, but key identity fields may be more restricted. If an important detail such as name, passport number, nationality, or date of birth is wrong and cannot be corrected properly, the safer approach is to submit a new form with accurate information.
The best prevention is simple: compare every identity detail with the passport page before pressing submit.
One small typo can create unnecessary stress. Taking one extra minute at home is easier than trying to fix the problem at an airport counter.
The simple version before you fly
Thailand’s Digital Arrival Card is not something to fear. It is a small administrative step that has moved online, like many modern travel requirements around the world.
Before flying, remember four things: complete it within three days of arrival, use the official Immigration Bureau website, prepare your first Thai address, and keep the QR code accessible offline.
For travelers, that is the real value of TDAC preparation. It does not make the trip more exciting, but it can make arrival feel smoother.
And after a long flight, that matters.
